Tips For The Proper Maintenance Of Your Asphalt Driveway

Blog

Keeping up with the maintenance of your home also includes keeping your driveway in top condition. When you have an asphalt driveway, there are going to be different things that you need to do in order to preserve its condition. To help you do just that, so you won't have to worry about completely replacing your driveway any time in the near future, you will want to take a look at the following tips.

Do Not Use A Metal Snow Shovel

If you live in a region where you get a lot of snow during the winter, you might need a snow shovel to clear your driveway. However, you want to make sure that you are avoiding the use of metal shovels or plastic snow shovels with metal tips. Over time, using such shovels, can cause significant damage to your driveway, which will then require you to spend more time and money fixing it up. Simply use a plastic snow shovel and for extra protection from damage, try your best not to scrape the driveway. Use the shovel to remove the top layer of snow. If  the bottom layer is nothing but snow, you can brush the rest of it away with a sturdy broom. If it is ice, it will melt away quickly now that you have removed the snow.

Skip The Rock Salt

Even though it might be tempting to break out a bag of rock salt to clean up the ice on your driveway, it may not be the best thing to do. Over time, that rock salt eats away at the top layer of your driveway. Simply removing the top layer of snow and allowing the ice to melt naturally is best. If you need some traction under your tires or around the vehicle so you do not slip and fall, you can pour cat litter on the ice. Once the ice has melted, you will simply need to sweep up the cat litter and toss it in the garbage.

Repair Cracks Immediately

The moment you notice cracks in your driveway is the moment you want to take action to repair them. If you wait, you will eventually notice that the small cracks turned into big cracks. It will then be a much bigger project for you to complete. Simply head to your closest hardware or home improvement store to buy the materials you need to repair your cracked driveway. If you do not want to do the work yourself, you could always hire a contractor like Premier Asphalt Paving Co to give you some assistance.

Improving Your Paving

About a year ago, I realized that there were all kinds of problems with our home's pavement. The driveway seemed to be chipping apart and the front walkway was desperately cracked. I knew that I had to do something to improve things, so I started working on getting bids to improve things. It was amazing to see how many different pavement options we had and how great of a job one contractor eventually did. The difference was astounding after all of the pavement was broken out and things were fixed. This blog is all about improving your paving and making a significant difference in your home.
